Blackpool’s renaissance in business tourism
Suzi Barnes, head of conference and events sales, Winter Gardens Blackpool, talks about the importance of tourism and business events for Blackpool.
In the landscape of business tourism, Blackpool is re-emerging as a formidable player. The inauguration of the £30m Blackpool Conference and Exhibition Centre in 2022, in tandem with the historic Winter Gardens Blackpool, has marked a new chapter for this coastal town. This transformation is part of Blackpool's ambitious £1bn+ Growth & Prosperity programme, aimed at revitalising the town with modern amenities, quality accommodation and upgraded transport infrastructure positioning itself as a modern conference and event destination.
Since the Conference and Exhibition Centre's opening, which notably hosted its first major event with the Conservative Party Conference, Blackpool has welcomed an additional 55,000 delegates. This surge in business tourism is a testament to the town's evolving appeal as a 21st-century event destination. The centre has successfully hosted diverse gatherings ranging from trade unions to e-gaming conventions, contributing significantly to the more than 20 million visitors Blackpool entertained in 2022.
The role of this resurgence in the local economy is noteworthy. Major upcoming events, such as those organised by the National Union of Students and Civil Service, are set to further enhance the town's profile. This aligns with the objectives of the Growth & Prosperity programme, which not only aims to attract visitors but also instils a sense of pride among residents.
Winter Gardens Blackpool's recent induction into the Association of Event Venues (AEV) symbolises its commitment to maintaining high standards in the event industry. AEV, representing venues both in the UK and globally, fosters connections, learning, and sharing of best practices among its members. This affiliation echoes Winter Gardens Blackpool's dedication to excellence and innovation in hosting events.
Blackpool's transformation, underpinned by these strategic developments, is reshaping its identity. With a blend of historical elegance and contemporary facilities, the town is rapidly becoming a sought-after destination for business tourism.
